The Snooty Fox is situated in the peaceful village of Uldale - a traditional fell village situated in the Northern Fells of the English Lake District. The area is one of the more remote and lesser known parts of the Lake District, but boasts some outstanding scenery and some of the best, less frequented walking in the whole of the Lake District. These include High Pike, Carrock Fell and some interesting alternative routes up the back of Skiddaw.
Fell walking, mountain biking, cycling and horse riding are all popular pastimes in this part of the North Lakes. No car required. Just step out the door...
The picturesque village of Caldbeck is only 5 miles away. Here the river and its tributaries provided the water for the important industrial development of the area in the 17th and 18th centuries - woolen mills, bobbin mills, corn mills, a paper mill and a brewery. The village still reflects this former industrial activity with many of the old mill buildings still in use. The Caldbeck Fells in former times were riddled with mines, long since disused.
Hesket Newmarket is only 1.5 miles further and has a shop/post office, together with tearooms. The Old Crown - the UK's first co-operative pub owned by the locals - with its Hesket Newmarket Brewery, is located in the village and make it another popular place for real ale enthusiasts. Hesket also holds an agricultural show in September every year which features wrestling, horses, ponies, hounds and terriers.
The popular long distance Reivers Route cycle route passes close to the village and we're a popular stopping off point for cyclists.
The bustling market town of Keswick between Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite Lake, overlooked by 3053ft Skiddaw, with its outdoor equipment shops, restaurants and cafes is only a 20 minute drive away. Cockermouth, with its lovely riverside location, traditional shops and historic Jennings Brewery is 11 miles away. The historic border city of Carlisle with its medieval castle, cathedral and Tullie House Museum is approximately 18 miles away.
For sailing and windsurfing enthusiasts, the lakes of Bassenthwaite and Derwentwater are a short drive away.
If you fancy a change of scenery, the popular Solway Coast, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is only 18 miles from Uldale.
